Kites

In keeping with the Monday Memories theme I decided on kites. March is known for good kite flying weather. Kite flying seems to be a rite of Spring.

As a kid we lived across the street from the elementary school which had a big grassy play area, which was perfect for flying kites. We didn't have fancy fabric kites just paper kites, but they were fun just the same.

I am also reminded of the story "The Day We Flew Kites" by Frances Fowler. I have always loved this story and wished it could have happened in my own family. I can't honestly remember the last time I actually went kite flying, I did take my daughter when she was little.

There is of course songs about flying kites, the only one I actually know is from "Mary Poppins" Let's Go Fly a Kite

I had no idea that kite festivals are held any where, but learned of several. If you do a search for kite festival you will find many states hold annual festivals.

There is a Smithsonian Kite Festival this year it is March 27 in Washington D.C. at the Washington Monument. Free to the public. That's always a plus. Lots of activites with the main activity being the kite flying competition with participants from all over the world. Wow!

Washington state boasts the only, kite museum located in Long Beach.Their kite festival is in August, which seems like an odd month for a kite festival.

The Dixie Escalante Kite Festival in Utah is a kite festival which is to promote reading as a habit and encourage students to engage in family-oriented physical activity. On the day of the event, qualifying students earn a high-quality kite or book for their reading efforts. Entrance to the festival is free, no pets please. The date for the festival this year is April 17 from 10a.m. to 9p.m.

With all these festivals it makes me want to go fly a kite.
